To avoid extra airline fees and ease transportation, we recommend one large suitcase and one carry-on per person. Airlines have become stricter about carry-on size and weight due to security.

Yes. Tap water is generally safe throughout Italy, and many cities provide public fountains (fontanelle) with drinkable water. Restaurants usually serve bottled water by default; if you prefer tap water, politely ask for “acqua del rubinetto” but note that not all establishments will provide it.

Pickpocketing can occur in crowded tourist areas and on public transport. Keep passports, tickets and valuables in your hotel safe. In public, carry minimal cash, be aware of your surroundings and avoid leaving bags unattended. Dial 112 for emergencies. If you experience theft, contact local police and inform your tour director.

Pharmacies (Farmacia) are marked with a green or red cross and typically open Monday–Saturday, 9:00–13:00 and 16:30–19:30. Hotel reception can advise which pharmacy is on duty during evenings or weekends. If you need a doctor, ask your tour director or hotel to arrange a visit

Banks usually operate 8:30–13:00, with some reopening briefly in the afternoon. Exchange offices often remain open all day. You will need a passport to exchange cash or travellers’ cheques. ATMs (bancomat) are widespread but use machines located inside banks or well-lit areas to reduce the risk of card skimming.

Tabacchi (shops marked with a white “T” sign) sell stamps, calling cards and sometimes prepaid SIM cards. Alternatively, you can purchase a local SIM or eSIM from providers such as TIM, Vodafone or WindTre; your passport is required. Most hotels and many cafés offer Wi-Fi.

Comfortable but tidy clothing is appreciated in Italy. Churches enforce strict dress codes: no bare shoulders, shorts or miniskirts. Bring comfortable walking shoes for cobblestone streets and a light scarf or shawl for religious sites. A compact umbrella or raincoat is advisable as weather can change quickly.

Standing at the counter (al banco) is cheaper than sitting at a table, as table service includes a surcharge. The classic Italian coffee is “espresso,” a strong shot served in a small cup. Variations include “cappuccino” (espresso with frothed milk), “caffè americano” (diluted espresso), and “caffè latte” (Latte). Meals are unhurried; waitstaff will not bring the bill until you ask.

Public restrooms are scarce and often require a fee of €0.50–€1. It is common to use the facilities in bars or restaurants; in tourist areas, ordering a coffee for this purpose is acceptable.

Tipping is not mandatory or expected as in the United States. Service workers in Italy receive living wages, and many restaurants include a “coperto” (cover charge) or “servizio” (service fee) on your bill. However, rounding up the bill or leaving €1–2 for good service has become common in tourist areas. For private drivers or guides, tipping is appreciated based on the quality of service.

Italy uses plug types C, F and L, with a supply voltage of 230 V and a frequency of 50 Hz. Most modern electronic devices are dual-voltage; check your device’s rating. You may need a travel adapter and, for single-voltage appliances, a voltage converter.

Italy’s train network is extensive. You must validate train and bus tickets before boarding; failure to do so can result in fines. In many city centres, restricted traffic zones (ZTL) prohibit unauthorised vehicles — fines are issued automatically. If you plan to drive, consult your tour director or rental company for details.

Italy’s climate varies by region. Summers can be extremely hot, particularly in the south; pack light clothing, sunblock and a hat. Winters can be cold and wet in northern regions. Check the forecast before travelling and pack accordingly.
